Instructions

Before your ERCP you will be asked not to eat or drink anything for 6 - 8 hours before the procedure. It is important for the stomach to be empty to all the doctor to visualize the entire area and reduce the chance of vomiting during the procedure. You will also need a friend or family member to bring you home after the examination. This is because the medications used for sedation can impair reflexes, judgment, and your ability to drive (similar to the effects of alcohol). Please ensure:

  • Do not have any food after midnight. Water or clear fluids are OK.

  • Alert your doctor to any allergies, especially prior allergic reactions to intravenous (IV) contrast dyes. If you’ve had a previous reaction, you may need to take allergy medications before the procedure.

  • Give your doctor’s office an updated list of medications and supplements.

  • Talk to your doctor about whether to stop taking blood-thinning medications such as apixaban, rivaroxaban, aspirin and warfarin , clopidogrel (Plavix), ticagrelor (Brilinta), prasugrel (Effient.)

  • Tell your doctor if you might be pregnant. Certain anaesthesia can harm an unborn child.

  • You must be picked up by someone after the procedure whether you plan to drive, take transit, or taxi.  Traveling alone is unsafe because sedation will not
    wear off for 24 hours.

  • You must not drive, operate machinery or drink alcohol for 24 hours after your procedure
